（一）吃粽子
是因屈原投江，民众怕屈原的尸体被鱼、虾吃掉，所以用竹筒装好米食投入江中，后来演变成用竹箨、竹叶包好投入江里喂鱼、虾。
（二）喝雄黄
因端午节后各种虫类，开始活跃起来，瘟疫渐多，雄黄具有消除疫病的功用；也是因白蛇传的故事，白蛇喝了雄黄酒之后，差点现出蛇形，所以民众则起而彷效，希望收到去邪的功能。
（三）挂艾草、菖蒲、榕枝
端午节在门口挂艾草、菖蒲（蒲剑）或石榴、胡蒜，都有其原因。通常将艾、榕、菖蒲用红纸绑成一束，然后插或悬在门上。因为菖蒲天中五瑞之首，象征却除不祥的宝剑，因为生长的季节和外形被视为感百阴之气，叶片呈剑型，插在门口可以避邪。所以方士们称它为水剑，后来的风俗则引伸为蒲剑，可以斩千邪。清代顾铁卿在”清嘉录”中有一段记载截蒲为剑，割蓬作鞭，副以桃梗蒜头，悬于床户，皆以却鬼。而晋代”风土志中则有以艾为虎形，或剪彩为小虎，帖以艾叶，内人争相裁之。以后更加菖蒲，或作人形，或肖剑状，名为蒲剑，以驱邪却鬼。
艾草代表招百福，是一种可以治病的药草，插在门口，可使身体健康。在我国古代就一直是药用植物，针灸里面的灸法，就是用艾草做为主要成分，放在穴道上进行灼烧来治病。有关艾草可以驱邪的传说已经流传很久，主要是它具备医药的功能而来，像宗懔的荆楚岁时记中记载日鸡未鸣时，采艾似人形者，揽而取之，收以灸病，甚验。是日采艾为人形，悬于户上，可禳毒气。一般人也有在房屋前后栽种艾草，求吉祥的习俗。台湾民间也有在端午时贴午时联，它的作用和灵符一样，有些午时联上有下列的句子手执艾旗招百福，门悬蒲剑斩千邪。榕枝在民间的意义可使身体矫健插榕较勇龙，插艾较勇健。也有地方习俗是挂石榴、胡蒜或山丹，胡蒜除邪治虫毒；山丹方剂治颠狂，榴花悬门避黄巢，石榴花正是这个季节的花卉，也有治病的功能。石榴皮为一常见的中药。而石榴花和黄巢的关系，还有一段故事。黄巢之乱的时候，有一次黄巢经过逼个村落，正好看到一个妇女背上背着一个较大的孩子，手上牵着一个年纪较小的，黄巢非常好奇，就询问原因。那位妇人不认识黄巢，所以就直接说因为黄巢来了，杀了叔叔全家，只剩下这个唯一的命脉，所以万一无法兼顾的时候，只好牺牲自己的骨肉，保全叔叔的骨肉。黄巢听了大受感动，并且告诉妇人只要门上悬挂石榴花，就可以避黄巢之祸。
（四）悬钟馗像
因为民间传说为抓鬼大帝，所以钟馗像有辟鬼的能力，据说唐明皇曾梦到一个大鬼和一个小鬼，小鬼在偷吃东西，大鬼便把它捉到吃了。唐明皇问大鬼说：你是什么人？大鬼说：我叫钟馗，是终南山的进士，因为面帽丑陋，应考时没被录取，我就自杀了。现在我誓为陛下除去天下妖魔。明皇醒后，就叫画家吴道子照他梦中所见，绘出钟馗像来除邪。原来钟馗像是在岁末时才挂的，明朝画家文征明还画过寒林钟馗，端午挂钟馗像可能是到明末或清初才有的习俗，台湾较少有此一习俗。
（五）划龙船竞赛
古代因为屈原投江而民众竞相划船，为了救屈原。现代则为一种表现团队精神的。最佳活动，而且在全省各线市的主要河川，每年都举办划龙船比赛，国内的无线电视台都会转播比赛盛况，近年来有逐渐发展成国际邀请赛的情形。龙船比赛会让外国友人喜欢的原因：它是一种有别于国外盛行的独木舟或八人式的划船，而是一种需要更多默契的力与美的运动。各地的龙船赛大同小异，值得一提的是：宜兰县二龙村的龙舟比赛，不因为他们的龙舟比其它地方长或漂亮而闻名，而是因为一项相传有两百年历史，而且只有两队--上二龙村的淇武兰和下二龙村的洲仔尾，他们各自拥有一条都绘有太极图案的龙舟，只是淇武兰以绿色为底，洲仔尾却以红色为底。比赛规则是两村的居民都是选手，反复在二龙溪比赛达数十次（从午后到黄昏），选手累了马上换同村的人上场，最后以胜的次数多的队伍为赢。
